Video 2: Tacking a Sailing Boat
Tacking is maneuver in sailing by which a boat turns its bow through the wind. The skipper announces the upcoming tack by alerting the crew: “Ready About”. The crew mans the sails ready to release the jib sheets. To start the tack the skipper gives the command “hard to lee”, and it is followed by the helmsman turning the tiller towards the lee side. When the jib sheet comes over, the crew releases the jib sheets and pulls the new jib sheet in from the other side. The excitement is soon over and the boat now sails smoothly into the wind.
