Roger Bacon (1214 – 1294), (scholastic accolade Doctor Mirabilis, meaning “wonderful teacher), English scientist, one of the greatest philosophers of the Middle Ages and Franciscan friar. He was born in Somersetshire, England, and he was educated at Oxford and Paris. Bacon was a proponent of the study of nature through empirical methods and was one of the first to propose mathematics and experimentation as appropriate methods of science. He studied mathematics, astronomy, optics, alchemy, and languages.
