“The future depends on what you do today.” -Mahatma Ghandi
Mahatma Gandhi was India’s most famous fighter for independence from the British colonial powers. He became famous when he fought for the civil rights of Muslim and Hindu Indians in South Africa. Back in India, Gandhi became a leader of India’s independence movement, organizing boycotts against the British in peaceful forms of civil disobedience (hunger strike). He was killed by a fanatic in 1948.
Even after his death, Gandhi remains a symbol of non-violence and the belief in simple living – making one’s own clothes, eating a vegetarian diet, and using fasts for self-purification.
