Are your kids complaining about school or a particular subject? Most of the time, you might not put too much thought into it. It’s so common, all kids hate school.
But the truth is that your kids may have specific reasons for disliking school. Let’s look at some of them:
School might not fit their learning style
You can help by doing a bit of research on the web about different learning styles. For instance, musical learners will benefit from playing music while studying, visual learners should try employing graphs and images etc.
Learning gaps
Your kids might have missed a few classes due to health/family reasons. And now they found themselves completely lost, and this can be extremely frustrating. That can be remedied with doing some extra work, or finding a tutor to help them catch up on schoolwork and gain confidence in their learning.
Social or psychological issues
The list of possible problems may include depression, anxiety, bullying, harassment, substance abuse, even assault. It can be complicated by the fact that some problems may only be a symptom of something deeper. The best way to find out for sure is to work with a trusted professional who has experience in helping others with these kinds of problems (usually a school counselor or psychologist).
Undiagnosed learning problems
Having dyslexia or attention deficit disorder undiagnosed can lead to school refusal/phobia, social alienation, depression or worse. It’s the kind of diagnosis every parent dreads, but the truth is that knowing is far better than not knowing.
The good news is- when you know why your kids don’t like school, you can start taking steps to make things better. With better understanding, parents and the school can help kids find joy in learning and to do their best in life.
