"Hi! My name is Derek and I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Biology from Amherst College. Throughout college, I came to love tutoring through working as both a Biology and Chemistry tutor for students in evolutionary biology and biochemistry. I enjoy coming up with creative ways of explaining complicated concepts to help my students develop a thorough understanding of the content, so that they are capable of applying these concepts on their own.
In my own experience preparing for the MCAT, I initially struggled to learn all of the new content. Having never taken a psychology or sociology class, I was especially overwhelmed by that section. Over time, I found myself learning tricks about how to be successful on the test, so that even on questions where I didn't 100% remember the material, I was still able to make strong guesses. I was able to raise my own score by 10 points in the last 6 weeks of my studying, and am confident that this is possible for anyone with the right studying and test-taking approach.
I know that the MCAT is an extremely stressful exam for everyone, and my goal as a tutor is to help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to approach the test with confidence and come away with a score you are proud of. In terms of my tutoring style, I am flexible regarding what my student wants, and am very responsive to feedback. I am happy to provide help with content review, creating a schedule, reviewing tests or practice problems, and anything else you may want. I am also happy to share my own notes and study plans from when I was preparing for the exam." less...
