"I have been tutoring math (and loving it!) since 2013 when I was studying for my Bachelor’s in Mathematics at Belmont Abbey College. After graduating summa cum laude with a 3.96 GPA, I continued tutoring in the evenings alongside my professional career. Recently, I transitioned to full-time tutoring, as I found myself drawn more to the joy of helping students. I love the spark of excitement in an "aha moment" and seeing my students grow and become more confident.
I see tutoring as an opportunity to empower students to navigate problems independently. Rather than teaching strategies and procedures alone, I dig into the “why”s underneath- why a method works, how it relates to other concepts, why we are doing what we are doing. Throughout our sessions, I try to tease out my students’ curiosity and foster perseverance. I push them to ask themselves questions, fight through problems, look for clues, set goals, and get the most out of their mistakes. If one way of looking at a concept isn’t clicking, I try out different angles until we find the one that does. Everyone’s mind and way of seeing the world is unique, and I enjoy connecting with my students and adapting to those differences.
The students I have worked with range from elementary to college level. I have tutored elementary students in math as a volunteer for six years and worked as a private tutor for eleven years, mostly with high school students. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, I taught high school Geometry for six months in the classroom as a long-term substitute and worked in the school’s learning lab, helping students with learning differences. To keep expanding my knowledge and becoming a better tutor, I am currently pursuing a National Tutors Association Certification.
Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, I recently moved to Asheville, North Carolina with my husband and 100 plants. I tutor virtually and in my home. If you are interested in tutoring, please reach out so we can see if it's the right fit. I'd love to work with you!" less...
