"Hello! My name is Matthew, and I'm currently a 4th year medical school student excited about tutoring! I graduated from Vassar College with Bachelor’s degrees in Biochemistry and Chinese, receiving General and Biochemistry Department Honors upon graduation. One of the most lasting lessons I learned in college was from my Intro Chemistry professor who encouraged me to not get bogged down in memorization. With thorough understanding and reasoning, she explained, what first appears as incomprehensible nonsense can be clarified into straightforward calculations. She continued on, explaining that the concepts and equations can “stick” in the long-term with repetition and practice. Yes–there will always be things that need to be memorized. But this approach makes herculean topics much more manageable.
My tutoring approach incorporates this–I believe the foundation is in learning the basics that will help all the other pieces fall into place. With new students, I like to find out what their specific learning style is and what they enjoy learning in order to optimize our time spent together. Depending on the student’s own preferences, I like to incorporate curiosity and creativity to make the material more accessible.
My past tutoring experience includes preparing a high school student for his New York State Regents exam. Topics we reviewed together included pre-calculus and statistics. I am equally comfortable with helping students review material to solidify their understanding as I am with educating on a new topic.
In my free time, I like to explore the city of DC with my dog, Stark, or play indoors with my cat, Whiskey. I am happy to provide a free consultation to see if I might be a good fit. Please reach out to let me know if you have any questions!" less...
