"Hello! My name is Charlie, and I've been teaching English courses at the college level since graduating with a Masters from the University of Oregon in 2018. I teach English Literature, Composition, Rhetoric, Syntax, and Creative Writing, with experience in classrooms at several U.S. universities. My courses and tutoring sessions are tailored to undergraduate students and high school juniors and seniors who range in age from 16-40 years old and come from all educational backgrounds. I'm practiced with tailoring course material to fit individual student needs and conducting one-on-one meetings both online and in-person to help students practice and develop flexible strategies for reading, drafting, reviewing, collaborating, and revising in ways that make sense to them. Whether the student needs help with a college application essay, long thesis-driven research paper, or analyzing a particularly dense book of English prose or poetry, I'm confident my educational and pedagogical background can help them accomplish their goals.
My teaching experience started with a job at the University of Oregon where I taught a year-long series of workshops and lectures aimed at developing young writers' critical understanding of the craft of creative writing. Since then, I've taught numerous sections of English Composition, Rhetoric, and Syntax both online and in-person at Texas Tech University and Maryville College.
My tutoring sessions always start with questions for the student relating to the assignment or course material. I have no outside agendas and want to hear what students think about whatever assignment they've been tasked with. I value individual voices and view my role as an educator as someone who can help these voices express their ideas in line with assignment guidelines and rubrics. Any materials related to the assignment that the student can bring to the tutoring session will be helpful. Please reach out if you have questions, I'm happy to provide more information and look forward to a scheduled session!" less...
