I was born and raised in Japan, so I am a native Japanese speaker, but I moved to the U.S. over 30 years ago. I have college degrees from both New York University in the U.S. and Obirin College in Japan.
I have been teaching Japanese for over 5 years with different tutoring companies, and I get 5 stars reviews all the time. My students say that I am very patient and pleasant. Most students work on learning Japanese with me for years. I feel joy when I see them improving their Japanese.
I have taught all levels and ages using different textbooks, such as Japanese from Zero! Genki, and Tobira. I teach beginner students with no prior knowledge of Japanese as well as intermediate and advanced students. In addition to using a textbook, I work with students to develop their Japanese speaking skills. For students at the intermediate level I begin having casual conversations, have students write diaries in Japanese, and provide translations of songs, videos, and anime clips.
Advanced students like to talk about topics related to their jobs or education as well as current events. We often discuss Japanese culture and cultural comparisons between the U.S. and Japan as well as global and environmental issues. Conversations in Japanese at the advanced level can be as long as 60 minutes.
Prior to working as an online tutor I taught English to children while having a voice over and acting training in Tokyo. When I was 24, I moved to New York City to study education and theater at NYU. I have been a bilingual emcee at numerous Japan festivals in the US as well as a cultural educator/Japanese storyteller at schools, libraries and Disney World. I am also an on-stage Q&A convention interpreter for Japanese actors who were in Godzilla movies as well as Ultraman and Powerranger series. I also translate documents for business contracts. I coach American actors for their Japanese script reading auditions for theme parks in Japan.
