"Despite the fact that I can offer assistance in many subjects to students of all ages, my academic credentials and background which include two Master of Science degrees and several years of teaching experience at a college level make me more inclined to work with college and advanced high school students on science (mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology) as well as standardized test preparation (ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, and MCAT) and academic competition exams. Also, I can work with students on one-to-one basis especially if personal attention or a boost in confidence is needed or in small groups. In either case, I try to create a friendly atmosphere that is conducive to learning. My belief is that students can have a more fulfilling and engaging tutorial experience when they feel that they receive personal attention not from a person they should fear but rather from a friend who is there to help.
The ultimate goal of seeking private tutoring by students is learning. Therefore, all activities during a tutorial session should revolve around this goal. In my first tutoring session with any student I try to assess his/her knowledge of the basic or key concepts of the subject matter so I can build on what he/she already knows and adjust my way of explaining material to match the need and learning style of the student. I then focus on building confidence by encouraging and motivating students to think for themselves and be active learners, and follow that by challenging students to unleash their potential to turn what might be their least favorite subject into their most favorite one.
One of my strong tutoring techniques is the extensive use of technology and visual aids like drawing pictures or illustrative diagrams to make a concept clearer. And to make the tutoring experience even more exciting and stimulating, I frequently ask the students to give an example that is similar to a one just discussed.
