"My love of reading and writing has shaped my entire life. It led me to pursue a Master's and a doctoral degree in English literature from The University of Kentucky. I am a master educator, with over twenty years of experience teaching all grade levels from Kindergarten age all the way to undergrad. I have taught ESL oral and written comprehension as a Peace Corps volunteer, college level composition and literature courses, public high school, and remediation in elementary school. I enjoy working with children and young people in any capacity, but my special interests include environmental education as well as test preparation.

I enjoy helping young people discover how much fun learning can be while empowering them to achieve a high level of proficiency in writing. I love removing the obstacles that make English seem inaccessible, frustrating, and just plain difficult. I help students improve their grammar, sentence construction, punctuation, spelling, and usage to create ease and flow. I also focus on thesis identification, idea development, evidence and conclusion--all the areas of rhetoric and composition. In reading, I assist students with comprehension, speed, and discrimination between main and supporting ideas. All of this together makes me effective at helping students maximize standardized test scores.

I specialize in tutoring students in the English portions of the ACT and SAT. I am also available to teach the GRE, IB essay, as well as assisting with high school and college level writing assignments. My schedule is fairly flexible, and I am willing to travel to meet students at a convenient location. My rate is $50, but I can provide a discount for lesson packages of ten or more.

I use strategies for test taking that will enable students to maximize their time during the test, while increasing efficiency and comprehension. For example, I show students how to skim a reading passage for main ideas, freeing up time to answer information-specific questions.
