"As an undergraduate at Smith College, I majored in Psychology, minored in Philosophy, and took many courses is English Literature. These are all subjects at which I excel, and served as a starting point for my expertise in areas of literary analysis, critical thinking and writing. Later, I earned a Masters of Arts in Education, specializing in School Counseling, and was certified as a school counselor for Kindergarten through 12th grade for many years. I spent 21 years as a school counselor at the secondary level, in both private and public schools.
My Master's thesis, "Motivation and Learning: From Theory to Practice," included a detailed plan for a High School Transition Program, which I later implemented and ran for 10 years. This included a Study Skills Course that I taught myself, including topics such as reading strategies such as SQ3R, note-taking strategies, writing techniques, test-taking strategies, mnemonics, metacognitive skills, organization, time management, self-assessment and self-advocacy. I also developed an after school tutoring program. In addition to training peer tutors, I tutored students myself, 4 days a week for 10 school years.
My post graduate professional development has included attending seminars on brain development, ADHD instruction, and workshops held by the College Board and American College Testing. Because of my work as a counselor, I am knowledgeable about a variety of learning styles, and with school plans such as Individualized Education Plans. I also understand the college admission process, and regularly read scholarly articles in this field.
During my 21 years working in schools, I taught Health classes for more than 10 years, co-taught English 9, and taught Independent Study courses in Pre-Algebra, British Literature and Philosophy. I held workshops for students on SAT preparation and writing a college admissions essay. Finally, I taught a variety of seminars for Masters' level students in Education.
I left school counseling to found my own company as a" less...
