"Hello, I'm Brad! I graduated with a 4.0 GPA while pursuing my bachelor's degree in mathematics with three minors. I am currently working on my master's degree in data science, where I am also holding a 4.0 GPA while working full time as an actuary. Finally, I just passed my final actuarial exam to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
I tutored a few different ways in college. First, I worked in the math assistance center, where students could come in and ask any questions for any class. Second, I worked as a teacher's assistant during classes to provide additional help to those with questions. Finally, I acted as a supplemental instruction tutor where I had sessions for the whole class in the evenings to help nail down difficult topics. Thus, I have spent time tutoring individually and in groups, and for broad questions and specific subjects.
Given the experience above, I have only tutored college students, but I am excited to work with students of any age to help them conquer math, and my experiences in college have helped me learn how to teach effectively. I have tutored for actuarial, statistics, algebra, excel, and calculus classes, so I have experience teaching many subjects. I am open to tutoring other math subjects as well!
My technique for tutoring is to try to help people understand why things work the way they do. Often, people struggle with subjects when they try to memorize rather than understand the underlying ideas behind a subject. This makes the class get harder as the year goes on since topics typically stack on one another. My sessions typically start with overviews of what was recently learned, an opportunity for the student to ask questions, some sample questions that stretch the desired brain muscles, and some additional time to ask more questions if they pop up. I'm also willing to tailor sessions to specific topics students are struggling with!
I hope to have the pleasure of working with you, so please reach out and I'll get back to you quickly!" less...
