"Hello! I taught World History for five years on various levels, including AP. Teaching and writing are two things that I greatly enjoy, especially within the scope of social studies due to its versatility and usefulness. The process of writing is and should be a fun experience as it is a chance for the writer to express their opinion through real life events and evidences. My classroom is always relationship and skills driven. The better I know my students, the better I can coach and develop the skills they wish to have and need to be successful in their academic pathway.
I LOVE helping students think like a historian. One thing I love about social studies and history is the big picture ideas and process that are always present and likely to repeat themselves. Imagine a barbed wired fence: the posts are you time periods and eras. The wires are your themes and the barbs are specific events and people. This is the lens through which I teach History. Focusing on these big picture ideas, test taking strategies, and writing skills is how I prepare students for AP exams. My teaching method would mimic Talk, Read, Talk, Write framework put forth by Nancy Motley. Students came to class prepared with content background from their textbook. I provide a short lecture to emphasize certain themes or ideas. A small reading or instructional activity geared toward evidence analysis focuses on specific items within the historical context. We would discuss our findings and thoughts and then they would provide a writing sample using the evidence to explain historical patterns.
