"I love math because it helps to explain how the world works! I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in May 2023 with a degree in applied mathematics.

While at Pitt, I was an undergraduate teaching assistant for two years in the mathematics department. Beginning in the spring of 2021, I taught pre-algebra and algebra recitations 1-2 times per week to groups of 30-50 students. I also tutored in the mathematics assistance center for 3-8 hours per week for calculus (1,2,3), pre-algebra, algebra, and linear algebra. I wrote my own lesson plans, and based on my positive student reviews, was deemed to be an efficient student tutor.

In spring 2022, I was promoted to the role of lead core instructor for algebra recitations in the math department. In this position, I not only continued teaching, but I also designed lesson plans that guided and supported other undergraduate teaching assistants in their sessions.

In high school, I tutored middle school students in mathematics, writing, history, and science for about two hours per week. This was part of a buddies program that paired high school students with middle school students to provide academic support.

I tailor my tutoring approach to fit each student's specific needs. I utilize the Socrates method, error-based learning, and active learning. Before each session, I identify the student's specific concerns and create targeted practice problems.

If a student is having difficulty with factoring, I create practice problems of varying complexity, incorporating both basic factoring techniques (factoring by greatest common factor, grouping, difference of squares) and applications of the quadratic formula.

If a student makes a mistake, then I will go over the mistake so that the student realizes what went wrong and then make up further different practice problems to reinforce learning. I encourage students to use active learning to verbalize their thought process, so I can help them to gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities." less...
