"Hello!
I've tutored all through college and grad school, mostly in chemistry but also in biology, math and Spanish. I love talking to students from different backgrounds and sharing what makes my subjects fun in a way that makes them more approachable. I am really passionate about science education and communication- I believe we make things a lot harder than they need to be, and I love being a part of detangling a subject for the student.
One of the things I heard over and over again during the roughly a decade I've been tutoring is folks say that they are just 'not good' at a given subject. While I completely feel the frustration of struggling with a new thing, I love changing people's minds. Subjects are skill sets just like any others, and it's ok to struggle while you become better at them! But given time and effort, there's few things more satisfying than watching a student become more confident.
Math was a big part of grad school and my professional career! Understanding how to apply math to real life is how I get through every day, and there's a lot of insight in the greater world to be gained from it.
I have a lengthy background in Chemistry with a master's and PhD, my focus is polymer science but I'm interested in a lot of different aspects of both fields. I continue my education with popular science reading and citizen science, and love explaining (or learning about) the latest weird thing I or a friend has heard about.
In addition to enjoying teaching and tutoring, I'm also passionate about neurodiversity. As someone who didn't find out until adulthood, I've learned a lot in the process about cognitive science and how different brains need to learn or process information in different ways. If someone needs a new approach or just to hear things explained in different ways, I am happy to help find a way to make it work." less...
