"I am Emmett, but professionally go by M.A. As an Assistant Professor, I am recently out of my Ph.D., which I received from the University of California, Davis in 2022. My junior status in academia, I hope, will reinforce that my pedagogy invests in non-judgmental and compassionate learning. I personally am a first-generation college student coming from a working-class background. Because of my personal life trajectory, I deeply value education, particularly reading and writing, as a means of empowering young persons and individuals generally to deeper introspection and more thoughtful, ethical, and nuanced engagement as community members as well as citizens. I also received my M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Mills College in Oakland, CA in 2014. During both my graduate and doctoral studies, I took a number of teaching courses as well as teaching practicums which helped build me into the professor I am today. I am fortunate enough to teach relatively small classes (25-30 students) at WSU-Pullman which allows me to get to know my students as individuals and provide holistic and tailored learning experiences as well as feedback.
