"Hi! My name is Shy. I graduated with the highest honors (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from the City College of New York where I obtained my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Classical Music Performance. During my years at CCNY I have also studied advanced music theory, ear training, composition, orchestration, counterpoint, 20th century music theory, Schenkerian Analysis and conducting - most of these courses were graduate level courses that I was allowed to take due to my excellent achievements as a student, which were acknowledged with awards and scholarships that I received every single semester, as well as the Kaye scholarship for overall academic excellence.
Prior to studying classical music, I had studied jazz piano privately, and so I am very well versed in improvisation. In fact, the accompanying video to this profile is that of a concert of free improvisation that I gave.
Most importantly, I love teaching! This was always something that was close to my heart, and I am happy to say that I have had hundreds of students go under my tutelage, some of which went on to become professional musicians. I chose the name "Attentive Music Lessons" when I reckoned that this is how most students would describe me, as being attentive to their unique way of learning and their interests. I believe that having the student choose their own piece to play enhances their sense of accomplishment, excitement and accountability, all of which are cardinal to their success.
I do teach all ages and all levels (piano, ear training, theory, improvisation, composition), including professional musicians of all instruments (performance coaching through music analysis). I believe I have a way of explaining fairly advanced concepts in a relatable manner that is easy to digest.
I do hope to have the privilege of going through this path with you! Please feel free to reach out to me." less...
