"Hello! I am a tutor with a background in software engineering, having worked in the industry for 6.5 years. I graduated from Notre Dame in 2014 and transitioned from medicine to software engineering. I am currently tutoring on the side because it is something I've always enjoyed. I am available to tutor for web development/CS, algebra 2, calculus, physics, test prep (MCAT / GRE / SAT), or something unique if I have the skills to help.
I do have a particular teaching style. Back in the day, my least favorite classes were those structured around having to memorize to do well. It's not that memorization is bad, but I think it needs to be balanced with other skills. By analogy, say you're learning Fur Elise on the piano. You could get really good at playing that piece by developing your muscle memory, and overall it could be a worthwhile endeavor. But if your goal is to get better at improvising or coming up with your own compositions, you'd need to supplement this approach.
Which brings me to how I approach our sessions. First, I'm always interested in building a safe, collaborative environment where it is 100% ok to fail a million times (a necessary part of learning anything new). Next, I want to focus our sessions on helping you define/refine your individual goals. For some things, e.g. say you have to learn calculus to pass your exams, there isn't much leeway and that is ok (although calculus itself does have broad significance). But this does become important if you're working to get into a career say in web development and want to clarify your direction. Lastly, most of our sessions will be focused on how to convert learned knowledge to the skills necessary to help achieve your goals. Part of this involves developing meta-learning skills (learning how to learn and how to approach self directed learning).
Side note disclaimer just to discourage certain requests, I cannot assist with specific homework assignments or projects in a way that would violate academic honesty policies." less...
