I gave a year of service with the Americorps out in California. In this program, I worked one-on-one with a selected group of students for 15 minutes a day, four days a week. This is when I discovered tutoring was a true passion for me! I watched these students grow tremendously, gaining both academic skills and, most importantly, confidence! The students would actually be excited when I arrived for our session each day and expressed sincere gratitude by the end of the year. I could not be more proud of them and I hope to inspire more students! I truly believe math is fun once you figure out what you're doing.
Let's face it: Math is intimidating! Any time I tell someone I have a degree in math, I always get the same look: "Oh, I always hated math!" That's only because you were afraid of it! Since math is sequential, meaning each new topic builds off the skills gained in the topic before it, a missed lesson can be catastrophic! And unfortunately, the eighth grade teacher can't stop the whole class to reteach the sixth grade concepts without falling behind in the curriculum. So the student continues to struggle and avoids the subject even more, causing lack of confidence and a distaste for the subject.
That's where I come in. I specialize in pinpointing the troubled area and then de-intimidating the subject. Since I work one-on-one with students, I am able to customize the session to fit each student's unique learning style. As the student finally starts to understand the material, confidence and even excitement grows! It is very rewarding for me to see someone master a subject they previously tho" less...
