"Hi! I'm Lucy, and I'd love to help you reach your goals in biology or chemistry. I'm a PhD biologist, with a BS degree in genetics and minor in chemistry. My specialized expertise is in molecular biology of plants and their viruses.
My teaching experience is varied over my 20-year research career. As a PhD student, I was a teaching assistant for general virology, general plant biology lab, and plant physiology college courses. I led class sessions and developed quizzes and review materials. I also worked one-on-one with students who were struggling.
Meanwhile, I mentored high school summer research interns in the lab. For most of my career post-PhD, I couldn't hold formal teaching positions, but took other opportunities to mentor. I've taught at an annual STEM lab program for middle schoolers, and done numerous outreach labs and presentations at local elementary schools and clubs. Running my lab, I've trained over 20 college student research interns and ca. 12 visiting scholars in research projects, in addition to training two graduate students, 8 postdoctoral scientists, and several technicians in my specialization. My research mentorship has included both foundational bench chemistry and molecular biology (wet lab and computational) skills applicable across many disciplines. I've also served as a university adjunct professor, presenting in graduate and undergraduate courses.
I enjoy one-on-one mentoring, and relish the moments when I can help you reach "aha!" moments as concepts connect. My teaching style is question-oriented, or like piecing a puzzle together. Your answers to questions can help us build on what you already understand, figure out and resolve where things are fuzzy, and build to the next level. It's so exciting when you can put together the pieces and figure out the next level on your own! Building your ability and confidence to do this my aim. Every student is different, so I'm always learning how to best tailor to your needs. I look forward to helping you meet your learning goals!" less...
