"My name is Dr. Dominick D., and I love learning and teaching! My focus is on science, and my tutoring philosophy is to meet students where they are with lessons tailored to them. I understand firsthand how vital tutors are. After I sustained third-degree burns in a car crash, my tutors helped me put my education back on track. When later I researched computational models for brain regions linked to post-stroke aphasia, my graduate mentors coached me on how to finish my dissertation.
I have a decade of teaching experiences as a tutor, TA, and instructor for college courses in biology, neuroscience, and speech at UMBC, Penn State, and BCCC. I also received a dual-title PhD with a specialty in speech-language pathology, a master's degree in neuroscience, and bachelor's degrees in biology and math as well as many scholarships, awards, and honors. Later, for three years at a software company, I was a data analytics lead, federally contracted through NIH on clinical projects. These accomplishments prepared me well to tutor across many STEM disciplines, including biology, computer science, linguistics, mathematics, neuroscience, psychology, and statistics.
Helping students means more than just helping them on an assignment. It is vital to help with communication skills too, as I did as a speech instructor and as a volunteer poster judge. Sometimes mentorship in professional development is needed, like when I onboarded new lab members or employees. A teacher must also attend to the needs of disabled and neurodivergent students, like when I volunteered with science outreach to visually impaired high school students. Whatever the circumstances, I strive to provide supportive mentorship.
Furthermore, I am a lifelong learner, often learning new languages or software tools. I can speak Spanish and Italian, and I am familiar with Python, Java, MATLAB, HTML, LaTeX, and many other programming and markup languages. I hope that you or your child will join me on this journey as we learn amazing things together." less...
