"I graduated from Brown University (2023) in Applied Math and Religious Studies with a 3.9 grade point average. At Brown, I was hired by the math department to tutor Brown students through Brown's Math Resource Center. I helped students with AB, BC, and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and mathematical modeling. Additionally at Brown, I tutored math in Spanish to ESL (English Second Language) high school students at Hope High School. During high school, I taught math and science at PS. 5 Ellen Laurie to middle school students through a partnership with Shen Wei Dance Arts. I currently tutor with an agency in Brooklyn and have taught the ACT, ISEE, SHSAT, Algebra and Geometry Regents, and also support students more generally with math, science, and English school work.
I focus on creative problem solving and practical applications in my teaching. In math there are a multitude of ways to solve problems and therefore many ways to explain any mathematical concept. If a student hits a wall with a particular strategy, I will pivot to a different method. For example, if someone is having trouble memorizing the formula for volume, which is base times width times height, I would take out a deck of flashcards to illustrate that the volume of the deck is the area of 1 flashcard times however many flashcards cards are in the deck, the height, which the student can see makes up the volume. Additionally, I use practical applications of math to make the problems at hand come alive. Kids become excited about solving problems when they see that math can eventually be used to estimate stock prices, predict disease spread, or win a game of blackjack.
I understand being tutored, so I always lead with empathy and the belief that anything can be taught to anyone. During middle school I struggled in math and my parents found an amazing tutor. The tutor gave me so much confidence that once I started high school, I was teaching my peers how to do homework problems. I hope to create this same kind of assurance in my students." less...
