"I've got many years of tutoring and teaching experience under my belt. I was a double major in mathematics and computer science, with a PhD in Applied Mathematics currently in progress through the University of MD, College Park. At the collegiate level, I have experience as a graduate teaching assistant, having taught Linear Algebra as well as Multi-Variable/Vector Calculus. In the private realm, I've tutored everything from middle school level Pre-Algebra all the way through collegiate Abstract Algebra. My specialty centers around discrete mathematics, number theory, and algorithms and complexity theory on the computer science side. However, I am equally happy working in any realm of mathematics including major areas such as pre-algebra, geometry, precalculus, trigonomoetry, calculus, abstract algebra, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics.
My love and passion for mathematics stems in large part from a few very dedicated and talented teachers that I've had over the years. Like so many things, I believe mathematics can be a fundamentally simple subject IF a student has been given a rock solid foundation in the basics; without this, it can instead be a daunting and complex world. Most of what we do in mathematics has a geometric interpretation, meaning we can draw a picture to represent the problem or formula we're trying solve. Having this sort of insight into what a problem is asking can make all the difference in understanding; it makes it very easy to check our answers, and can tell us very quickly if the answer we've calculated for a problem even makes sense. The goal in all my teaching and tutoring is to give students the tools they need in order to check their work and answers, and know immediately if their answer to a problem makes sense and is correct or not; with these tools in hand, I find most students are able to approach any realm of mathematics with a great deal of confidence and success." less...
