"Hi, I'm Elise! I am currently a math tutor with a tutoring company based in Denver and an independent private math tutor. I graduated from Macalester College with a BA in Mathematics, and then spent 5 years as a Math PhD student at the University of Minnesota, where I received my MS in Mathematics. I was a TA to my peers in college, and then when I was a TA in graduate school I fell in love with teaching calculus, especially the one-on-one time during my office hours. As a TA at the U of M I taught discussion sections to supplement lectures and held office hours to help students with homework or any other problems understanding the material.
I was a TA for Calculus I, Calculus II, and a class called Sequences, Series, and Foundations which combined logic, Discrete Math, proof-writing and an introduction to Real Analysis. I also lectured Calculus III at Macalester for a semester as a visiting instructor. Through these experiences I worked with all kinds of college students and learned that each student has their own challenges when it comes to math. Some struggle with the big concepts, some struggle with the little details, and my job is to figure out where you get stuck and what will help you overcome those obstacles. The best reward is when a student feels more confident in their abilities at the end of a tutoring session.
My tutoring approach focuses on building skills that you will re-use over and over in math (especially calculus) rather solving each problem in a vacuum. When you focus on the skills of problem-solving, you can answer a question you've never seen before based on problems you've already worked out. I cater lesson plans to a students' needs, not everyone thrives in the same learning environment. Whether you need a mini-lecture to refresh the topic, or just lots of practice problems, we will figure it out together to help you flourish." less...
