"Thank you for your interest. What makes me qualified to tutor your child? My story is a personal one. I have a son who has dyslexia. I understand the stress and anxiety this brings into the home. After watching the school system fail my child, I decided it was time I intervened. I tutored my son for 3 years using the Barton program. I was asked by friends to tutor their children. I found my passion, I saw growth in the students I tutored, increase in their self-confidence and learning become rewarding. I later enrolled in a master’s degree program to become certified.
I am CALP (Certified Academic Language Practitioner) certified via ALTA (Academic Language Therapy Association). If you go to >AltaRead.org you will find a list of certified tutors in your area
My OG certification is from the Children's Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago Scottish Rite, accredited program by IMSLEC and IDA. This is a 15-month master’s program that includes 100 hours of supervised tutoring, 45 hrs. of classroom instruction and rigid guidelines to qualify to take the final exam. Please know that not all OG tutor certification are accredited by IMSLEC and IDA.
MSLE (multi-sensory language education) is the foundation of the OG approach. Current research has proven that MSLE changes the way the brain function. Multi-sensory uses all senses, including auditory, visual, kinesthetic and tactile. Lessons are structured and sequential; each new lesson is based upon the results of the past. Lesson are NOT scripted. The OG approach includes teaching toward automaticity and fluency. Lessons are success oriented, students are only asked to spell/read what has been directly and explicitly taught.
I incorporate Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) into my lessons.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Minimum 2 days week.
