"Hi! My name is Tara and while I graduated from Southwestern University with a major in Biology (Pre-med track) and a minor in Spanish, my love has always been math, which lead me to becoming a math teacher and tutor. I am a certified 8-12 Math teacher and I have taught Algebra I, Geometry, and Geometry Pre-AP at the high school level in Fort Bend ISD and have tutored students in elementary math, Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Math Models, and Algebra II. I have also helped two adult learners pass their 8-12 Math Certification tests so that they can teach high school math and helped a student pass the math portion of the GED. I am also currently working on completing my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership thru Lamar University. One of the best parts of teaching was tutoring the students before and after school because I could work one-on-one with them and really help them understand the material. If a student is willing to learn and work hard, then I can teach them. I relate well with students and am extremely patient when a student cannot understand the material right away. I have a passion for learning and I will share that passion with students. I want to make a difference in students' lives by inspiring them to reach their full potential just as my teachers made a difference for me.
When tutoring, I believe it is extremely important for the student to learn by doing. I emphasize the importance of taking notes in class (and help my students learn how to take useful notes) and then actually using them! You'd be surprised how many students never look at their notes again once they leave the classroom. If a student is having trouble in a certain area and cannot complete a problem even after searching their notes, then we will work one or two examples together. Then it is their turn. If they are still having trouble, I ask questions to lead them in the right direction. In the areas where students are really struggling, I will relate the problem to the student, or will give them an alternate way to solve" less...
