"I’m Philip, a certified math teacher with 13+ years of classroom and virtual teaching experience. Throughout my career I have also tutored in many different settings (one-on-one, small group, in person, virtually, etc.). The last thing I ever wanted to be was a teacher, having come from a family of educators. However, the first time I stepped into a classroom as a substitute I realized how wrong I had been to fight my destiny. My calling in life is to help students realize the potential they already have, especially when it comes to math.

I started my career as a Middle School Math Teacher and quickly moved into a position as a Dropout Prevention Teacher specializing in Math in a High School. In this position I realized how important simply believing in a student is. Having realistic expectations and helping them hold themselves to those expectations is imperative especially when it comes to math. So many students don’t believe in themselves because they have been told they can’t do it. One of the ways I teach is to try and show students that math is an important life skill. Take the numbers out of it and it boils down to problem solving. A skill they will use every day of their life. This approach has a lot of success for me. It takes the when am I ever going to use this off the table. I have also been commended on my ability to break down concepts to make them more “understandable”. I simply try to open their eyes to what math truly is and how it makes sense to me.
