"I am a certified teacher in several different areas: elementary education, special education, middle school and high school English, and middle school and high school social studies. I would also be comfortable in tutoring people for the reading portion of the ACTs and selected Praxis tests. I have extensive experience with ESL students. I was teaching in the public school system for ten years, mostly in middle school and elementary school.
As a teacher, I believe very strongly that one of the most important foundations for success is building up the students' confidence in their abilities. To that end, I prefer to have preliminary information about present levels of functioning (both strengths and weaknesses), as well as general likes and dislikes. I am equally comfortable with helping students with their school assignments or with creating units based on preferences. As a former special education teacher, I am used to working one on one with students, assessing their individual needs and working as a team in order to help the student be successful.
I would prefer to meet at public libraries, at least for the initial meeting. Since I am no longer teaching, I have a lot of flexibility in scheduling." less...
