"Since the pandemic, I have been teaching reading, writing, and study skills online to students of all grade levels. Prior to that, I was a full time teacher in California public schools. I am fully credentialed. I taught special education for four years, as well as one year of second grade. I got my bachelor's degree in International Relations at the University of California, Davis. Then I went to graduate school at Mills College in Oakland for my general education credential (multiple subjects). After that, I attended California State University East Bay to earn my special education credential (mild-moderate) and a masters degree in special education. I have taken numerous courses and workshops to study a multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham based methodology to teaching reading.
Throughout my career, I have effectively helped students with learning disabilities like Dyslexia and ADHD to improve their reading outcomes. This is one of the great joys of my life: to help these students feel confident and joyful when reading and writing. I am very excited to bring my knowledge, resources, and skills to new students!I believe that one of the key components to effective teaching is to build strong relationships based in mutual trust. This, coupled with effective teaching strategies, can help students to excel.
I have a variety of strategies to teach reading that I use to tailor lessons to meet individual student needs. When working with students with reading disabilities, I typically build a strong foundation in phonics using a multi-sensory approach first. Then, I will help students to expand their comprehension skills through reading, questions, and dialogue. However, every student is different. I conduct informal assessments to determine the exact needs of every student.
When I am not teaching, I am often going for runs with my dog, playing board games, reading, or exploring. Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!" less...
