"I have a Ph.D in chemistry and I have taught large lecture classes in a university for the past 22 years. I have taught both general & organic chemistry courses. My teaching method involves guiding students to understand basic principles behind complex concepts. I use simple analogy to breakdown the concepts, and also provide several similar problems so that students have chance to practice what they have learned. For organic chemistry, just memorization is not going to help, so I guide the students to know what to study and how to apply their knowledge on a different situation.
Over the years I have tutored 100s of high school and college students for Honors, pre AP and AP chemistry, general and organic chemistry. My biggest strength in tutoring is to understand the weak areas of my students and start from there. Chemistry concepts are built on each other. If you don't understand the basics, you will not be successful in higher levels of chemistry. In genchem, try to fully understand periodic trends, electronegativity, valence electrons, bonding concepts, Lewis structures, formal charge and resonance structures, balancing equation, stoichiometry, moles, acid-base chemistry, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. Some of these concepts are very essential before you venture into Ochem. In Ochem the main topics are naming compounds, stereochemistry, reagents and reactions, showing arrow pushing of electrons & mechanisms, synthesis and spectroscopy (IR, NMR, Mass spec)
Everyone has different learning style. For some, making flashcards and memorizing may work (especially for organic). For others, working on the end of chapter problems, watching videos and writing number of times may be the best way to go. If one sets their focus and take dedicated effort, chemistry is not hard after all. So, if you are one of those individuals who struggles with chemistry but ready to put effort to succeed please reach out to me. Feel free to read through students feedback. Wish you all the best." less...
