"Dr. Ian McIntyre is a freelance clarinet performer and educator. For the past 10 years, including 2 years virtually, Ian has been teaching clarinetists of all ages. In 2020, Ian graduated from Florida State University with his Doctor of Music in Woodwind Performance degree. During his degree, Ian researched and published his treatise on electroacoustic clarinet music. The research focused on the tools and practice techniques that can be used for approaching the different styles of electroacoustic music. In addition to his research, Ian is an active orchestral musician, holding the second clarinet position with the Imperial Symphony Orchestra in Lakeland, FL, and performs frequently with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Gainesville Orchestra, and Holland (MI) Symphony Orchestra.
Ian has recently presented a recital at the American Single Reed Summit where he premiered new works for clarinet. In March of 2019, Ian participated in a residency at the Thomasville Center for the Arts with Cosmos New Music in a program that featured new music from around the world. As a soloist, Ian was a Semi-Finalist in the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition in 2019. Ian also toured the southwest United States with the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble during his undergraduate degree. While with this group, Ian worked with leading contemporary composers such as David Biedenbender, David Lang and Armando Bayolo to perform and premiere new works.
Ian received his Master’s degree from the University of Florida and his Bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University. His former teachers include Mitchell Estrin, Arthur Campbell, Joel Schekman, Scott Anderson and Martin Van Maanen. In addition to performing and teaching clarinet, Ian enjoys composing electronic music and spending time with his wife, Katlin and their dog Gabby.
