"Hello! I'd like to tell you about my experience with Latin and Ancient Greek, my experience as a tutor, and how I work with students, whatever their current level may be!
My interest in Latin and Ancient Greek began while I was in high school. I became interested dramatic literature, so I decided to read English translations of the surviving Greek tragedies. I enjoyed them so much that I thought it would be better to study them in their original language. So when I enrolled in Bard College, I decided to major in Classics (also known as Greek and Roman studies). For my Senior Project I translated and directed Sophocles' Antigone.
I have been studying Latin and Ancient Greek for six years. I enjoy the intensely technical aspect of studying these languages. Not only has it deepened and enriched my understanding of the languages I knew already, but it has also made it easier for me to learn new languages. Attention to detail, knowledge of the parts of speech, awareness of stylistic and rhetorical devices, and a general comfort with texts of any kind, are all part and parcel of studying Ancient Greek, Latin, or both.
The youngest student I have tutored was fourteen; the oldest is eighty-three. I have been tutoring privately for three years and I enjoy figuring out how to present things in a way that makes sense to any given student, regardless of age or experience.
I am able to help students prepare for quizzes and tests, in which case we focus on class material with an eye to getting an A. But I also help students develop their reading comprehension in Ancient Greek or Latin with the longer-term aim of reading more easily and thoroughly, as well as developing a more nuanced appreciation of the language. During lessons, we read together and talk through more difficult features of the language." less...
