"This year I graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences, earning a 3.31/4 GPA. While working towards that degree, I took general and organic chemistry, physics 1, calculus 1-2, geology, ecology, other earth science courses, and some data processing classes. My high school focused heavily on writing and critical thinking with a “classical education,”so I have strengths there as well. I had a 4.0/4 GPA in high school. I am almost fluent in Spanish. I took classes in high school, studied via online tutoring and conversation practice, and attended a language school for 2 weeks in Costa Rica with my family.
My twin and I peer-tutored friends throughout middle and high school, helping them prepare for tests or proofreading papers. I have also frequently tutored younger siblings and family friends in elementary, middle, and high school in the following subjects: Spanish, Latin, English/Lit/Grammar, Pre-algebra, Geometry, Chemistry. While at UVA, I helped my sibling through community college general chemistry 1 and 2 and an English course. This was mostly over the phone- we FaceTimed to work through lab reports and homework problems, or to talk through sentences and ideas as we wrote a paper. During college, I co-led a women’s Bible study and taught beginners breakdance in my dance club. This spring I briefly volunteered as a tutor for an elementary after-school program for disadvantaged students. I have tutored in person and over the phone, usually in a one-on-one setting or in groups of 2-3. I like to sit down with the learner and work on an assignment so that by the end of a session we have some homework done and have had a chance to talk through concepts (for math/sciences/reading) or get repetition in (for languages/test prep). I have often worked with students who didn’t enjoy the task at hand, so I approach with enthusiasm and patience. I have received feedback that I balance progress and breaks well to keep learners engaged." less...
