"Hi. I’m new to Wyzant, but not to teaching and tutoring. I’m a college lecturer and writer, who has experience tutoring lower level elementary students in reading. I have a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University and a master’s in screenwriting from California State University, Northridge, where I have also taught. As a writer, I have written movies for Nickelodeon, as well as animated YouTube shorts for Peacock Kids.

I have worked as a tutor at a local Los Angeles public elementary school through Sylvan Learning. I was trained in their Ace It! Program for reading, which emphasizes fluency, phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary. I worked primarily with lower-level elementary students in a multi-month program where I consistently had to assess the students’ comprehension of material and evaluate their progress. I’m happy to report that according to testing, most students showed growth in their reading skills.

I have also taught media writing at the college level and screenwriting to adults. In these classes I emphasized clear communication through the written word. I often had to pay special attention to grammar, sentence syntax, word choice, and formatting. As a tutor, I will be able to help people with those writing elements, among others.

My approach to tutoring and teaching is friendly, thoughtful, and patient. I strive to create a fun and engaging environment, while being attentive to where a student may need improvement and supporting their growth. A student’s success is important to me, so if you choose to pursue tutoring with me, I will endeavor to give you the tools and attention you need to flourish.

Beside tutoring reading, writing and related fields, I am also a history buff and would be happy to work with students in that subject. I’m also available to tutor social studies, elementary math and elementary science.
