But what this really means is that during the long course of my life I have personally experienced much of the failure which life can bring, and have learned how to successfully and happily overcome that failure. If I teach your student nothing more than this, then we will have already succeeded. Moreover, I specialize in working with with students who underperform and dislike themselves.

My first task with any student is to convince the student that he or she really can succeed at his or her studies. The greatest barrier anyone faces which prevents academic success is disbelief in his own ability to learn. If a student does not believe he will succeed, then he will not. He or she MUST learn that with hard work, learning success WILL come. In fact, the most rewarding students to work with are those who have given up on themselves and on their being able to learn. While these are among the most difficult students, once they begin to believe in their own worth and abilities, their progress begins to accelerate like a rocket during launch.

I know how much being bullied can emotionally damage a person, and have worked with students of all ages, and from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Finally, I served four years as an instructor in a special middle school program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. The only students permitted were those who had been determined to be at risk of dropping out of school. For each year that the program operated, my students measurably increased their math and English scores two school years for each one spent in the program. We also outperformed every other participating school.

For three years I worked with international students from aged 4 through 18 in both Malaysia and Indonesia.
