"My love for tutoring comes from the personal experience of having been short-changed by an often unforgiving and unspecialized educational system. Knowing that struggling with the system does not mean one must struggle with learning, I have the personal experience and know-how to help students in the same way that I helped myself.
When I graduated from High School in 2009, I had a 1.4 GPA, my highest level of mathematics was Algebra 1, and my most advanced science was Sophomore Biology. One year later, I had completed Calculus 2, scored a 5 the AP Biology exam by self-study, and moved from community college to Rutgers University. At Rutgers I graduated with a Bachelors in Genetics within 3 years (with a 3.48 GPA), scored a 35 on the MCAT by self-study in the summer of my sophomore year (without having taken the prerequisites), and subsequently obtained admission to medical school.
Having long desired to show struggling students that they too can overcome the shortfalls of an education system that operates on the assumption that all students learn the same way, I became a Learning Assistant for Rutgers University.
In my capacity as a learning assistant, I provided free weekly Genetics tutoring at the Rutgers University Learning Centers and functioned as an intermediary between graduate student TAs and undergraduate students in Genetics recitations. Using a concept driven, individualized, and efficiency focused approach, I was able to help students discover how they can make unique adaptations and thrive in a wider variety of educational systems and classes.
Being that I am currently in my first summer break following a year of medical school, I have an abundance of time, a desire to serve, and means to travel wherever I am required in order to do so. I am therefore in a position to be very flexible and available with my time, travel requirements, preparation, and personalization.
If given the honor, I am confident that I can use the same concept focused and adaptable techniques that enabled me" less...
