"With a BA in Biology from Cornell and an MFA from USC, I have been teaching and tutoring for over 20 years. I am an experienced test prep teacher with Kaplan, and have developed my own teaching methodology. above all else, I prefer to teach to the student, using his or her strengths to make the subject matter accessible. I have a Montessori background and try to make concepts as concrete as possible. I prefer to explain the "why" and "how" of a concept instead of relying on memorization or other hacks.

I love helping students get to the "light bulb" moment in math and science where all of the concepts click and the subject becomes easy. What keeps me engaged as a tutor is figuring out how each individual student thinks and learns best, and creating explanations that work with individual learning styles. English grammar and writing skills require a slightly different strategy, but teaching students how to hone and polish their own work so that they eventually do not require a tutor at all is always my goal. :)

I've tutored many students in Geometry. It is a different more visual way of thinking. With a solid foundation, I think it is the most concrete and easiest of the high school math courses. I help students to understand and build on the basics, bringing even the most advanced ideas back to more easily understood visuals.

I have been tutoring students in Chemistry for nearly 20 years. With a BA in Biology from Cornell and a background in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Biochem I am very passionate about this subject. It is one of the most challenging high school courses because it is built on concepts and a deep understanding of ideas. Unlike classes that have come before, Chemistry cannot be mastered by memorization. However, understanding chemistry thoroughly makes it straightforward and even fun. It has the qualities of a challenging puzzle and I love helping students learn to solve it.
