"Hi, I'm Sophie! In 2021, I graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and a minor in computer science. For the past year, I have been tutoring students in numerous areas of mathematics, from middle school pre-algebra to college calculus. Through tutoring, I have discovered a love of teaching! I enjoy the challenge and creativity involved in finding new ways to teach complex concepts to students. I find it incredibly rewarding when a tricky topic finally clicks for a student, and I can tell they really understand it.

At Cornell, I worked as a teaching assistant for several semesters. I helped teach one semester of an honors-level physics course, and two semesters of an honors-level, math-based computer science course. Through teaching at Cornell, I learned how to tailor my lessons so that students can see challenging concepts from new, clearer perspectives. 

In middle school and high school, I took as many accelerated math classes as I could, from advanced geometry all the way through AP Calculus and AP Statistics. In college, I continued taking honors-level math courses, and even completed an honors thesis in probability. This is to say that I have loved math since I was young, and am very comfortable with most disciplines of the subject, from basic algebra to multivariable calculus. Moreover, I genuinely believe that math is fun, and I know that a good teacher can make her students think so too. I know that when students don't just learn how to use mathematical formulas, but instead understand where they come from and why they're important, math becomes tangible, worthwhile, and fun. This is the philosophy that guides my teaching.
