"My name is Devon JL but my students call me Ms. JL with such a long and complicated last name. I have been a teacher for 13 years and have taught many age groups from pre-K all the way to my current job which is High School students. I have a Bachelors degree from Salve Regina University in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. I have done Special Education most of my career but also tutored children without learning differences. A fun fact about me is I lived in Kenya for 10 years and did everything from special education, to teaching 4th grade Science, to home schooling children, to heading the special education department at a British International school, to starting my own tutoring and assessment consultancy business. I am now back in the USA and working as a special educator at the high school level and really just enjoy creating lessons for students that are fun, interactive, and bring out their creative side.
My favorite thing about being a special educator is finding out what makes students "tick", what are their interests and strengths and how can I use that to build up their areas of need. Another thing I love about my job is that I get to work in a huge variety of subjects which gives me a lot of breadth and depth to my abilities. I have taught in subjects such as Geometry, Biology, Phonics, Reading/Writing/Comprehension, Math, US History, elementary level Social Studies and science, and even Marine Biology!
I really look forward to using this platform to connect with other students outside my school and bring my talents and love of teaching to help them reach their goals." less...
