"I am currently teaching, and am one of the Mandarin Instructors on campus. This will be my 5th year teaching Mandarin, and my 10th year teaching overall. I have experience teaching all grade levels and am a CA State Credentialed teacher. To date, I have taught English all grade levels, 4th, 5th grades, Elementary and High School Mandarin and History, and ESL. Furthermore, I have taught the little one's art to develop their fine motor skills and color awareness. In addition to my classroom experiences, I have taught SAT test prep and helped students achieve their goals.
I believe that everyone can acquire a second language naturally, and I use an energetic and kinesthetic based approach when engaging students in Mandarin. This method was developed by top linguist researcher such as Dr. Stephen Krashen of USC who stresses a natural Comprehensible Input Based approach to learning language. Methods include, games, physical movement, storytelling, reading short stories, writing short stories, and conversation, etc. I apply this methodology and approach to ESL students as well.
I prefer working with small groups, and my students do too, as it makes the class more fun, entertaining, and thereby effective. However, I also do one on one tutoring with students to give them that individualized support they need in order to achieve their desired results!
I have practiced Comprehensible Input based strategies in teaching for 5+ years, and have seen my students achieve basic conversational fluency in just 6 weeks! They are able to slowly, articulate what they like, where they want to go, and what they want to buy. It's quite amazing what repetition repackaged and delivered in a novel way can facilitate with accessing a second language!
