"I have over 25 years experience as a math teacher and tutor. Simply put, I love working with students, both in a classroom setting and one-on-one as a tutor. I enjoy explaining things and the challenge of trying to make complicated topics simpler or at least understandable. For me, it's very satisfying to see a student finally get something they've been struggling with for a while, to experience that moment when something clicks and becomes clear.
Although I certainly like working with students who love math and have always been comfortable working in the world of mathematics, in some ways I prefer working with students who struggle or who don't necessarily consider themselves to be strong at math. Or students who just don't like math or see the point of it all. That's a special challenge that I relish, and although I don't always succeed at getting someone to like doing math, I can at least get them to feel more confident about themselves as math students.
I'm qualified to tutor in all levels of high school math, from Algebra 1 up to AP Calculus. I can also help out with SAT and ACT prep, as well as other math-based graduate level exams. Whatever the level, my approach is always the same: I present clear explanations of the topic, provide plenty of examples, and give the student the opportunity to show me what he or she has learned. I know it's a cliche, but math is not a spectator sport; you can't learn by just watching someone else do it; you've got to jump in and give it your best shot.
I look forward to hearing from you. My hours are very flexible during the summer, so I'm sure we can find a mutually convenient time to meet." less...
