"I have a lot of experience teaching history, having taught as an adjunct in the history departments at both Rhode Island College and Bryant University. I have taught a wide range of subjects. I was trained in US history and have taught all periods of US history. At Bryant, I was used in many European history classes, particularly 19th and 20th century Europe. At Rhode Island College, I taught in the western civilization program and had a lot of success with the earlier half, ancient and medieval history, even though I didn't have a great background in this.

I think I did well teaching this material because I was able to make the subject enjoyable for the students and was able to present things really clearly. I was fairly demanding, but because students enjoyed the work, they didn't mind. I received a lot of evaluations that said, "I usually don't like history, but Mr. O. made it interesting."

I spent a lot of time working with students on drafts of papers. If they were willing to hand things in ahead of time, I would go over their work thoroughly, mark it up, and meet with them to explain things, and help them rewrite the paper. I also took the time to teach a little writing while teaching the history subject matter.

I taught SAT prep for two years for Stanley Kaplan, teaching both math and English.

I also work in the food business and have spent a lot of time working with high school students and get along well with them, despite being an older person.

As a tutor, I would focus on getting students to understand subject matter, help them prepare for exams, and help them write papers. And hopefully, they would enjoy tutoring sessions and not find them dull. In some cases, historical material can be related to current affairs. In a lot of other cases, however, this is not really that helpful, and explaining the context of the period being studied, giving the student insight into how people thought and understood things back then, can be much more useful than relating things to curre" less...
