"Hello there! My name is Jay, and I am currently a doctoral candidate in Literature at the University of Texas at Dallas. I am finishing my dissertation and plan to graduate in the summer. I also have a BA and MA in French from the University of North Texas. Lastly, I have an online teaching certificate from UT Dallas.
I am passionate about the value of writing to students of all subjects and ages in order for them to be able to express themselves and be competitive in the workplace. I have been teaching for about 6 years now, have been working in academia in general for almost 9 years. I have worked with many international students and second generation students in particular. Age wise, I have primarily taught students from the ages of 18-22, however, I have even taught a few students in their fifties. The particular courses in which I have been the instructor for in the past are Elementary French, Intermediate French, Rhetoric, and Intro to World Literature.
As a tutor, I value one-on-one time with students in order to discuss drafts of essays. This stresses the non-linear process that is writing, and it also emphasizes the importance of completing multiple drafts of essays before submitting an assignment. I often include mandatory one-on-one sessions with students that I teach, and the improvement of their writing throughout the semester is often clear to see (more fluid writing, well supported arguments, higher scores on essays, etc).
I do want to be clear that by no means will I write your essays for you, but I will provide feedback that will allow you to improve your work in a more informed manner. I hope to inspire your own inner creativity as you continue to practice writing. I also aid students in setting goals in order to make longer assignments more manageable and to aid in the development of time management skills. In short, I try to make the process of writing essays seem less like a chore and more like a creative outlet.
