"I’m Colton! Currently, I teach high school English in Mississippi, and I am in the process of earning my master’s degree in teaching from the University of Mississippi. I graduated from Sewanee: The University of the South with a B.A. in history. My greatest passions are literature, history, and education, and I take great joy in exploring these subjects with my students. Reading and writing effectively and with purpose are, in my mind, the most important skills one can develop. My goal as a teacher and tutor is to grow my students into critical thinkers, astute writers, and fully-informed citizens. My teaching philosophy is centered around the dialogic method, whereby students and teachers learn and communicate knowledge through discussion and reflection. I believe in a student-centered approach to learning, and I always make adjustments to my method and strategy to fit students’ needs.
I have a year of experience teaching high school English – working with students of all levels and abilities – and I have also conducted focused, directed tutoring on common core standards and ACT English and reading skills. As a tutor, I can conduct lessons specifically designed for the ACT, as well as studies of literature and history, or any class work or writing assignments a student may have. My goal is to provide the best instruction possible for my students, and I am flexible and willing to work with students in anything related to literature, writing, or history.
I have over a year of experience teaching high school English, and have graduate training in educational practice. My background in English includes numerous courses taken as an undergraduate that prepare me for this work – such as "American Environmental Literature," "Classical Drama," and "American Gothic Fiction." In addition, as a history major, I was awarded a prize for the best history student in my class, presented research at conferences of the Associated Colleges of the South and the Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science, a" less...
