"Hello! My name is Dr. John Foley and I am a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine (MD) and Vanderbilt University (Dual B.A.s in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Spanish). My GPA at Vanderbilt was a 3.74/4.0 and I graduated with Cum Laude honors. I scored within the top 6% of test takers on the MCAT. I have a strong background in all the basic sciences including Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biochemistry. I am also bilingual (Spanish) and have worked and taught medical Spanish to medical students.
I have more than 10 years of experience working as a private tutor in a variety of subjects including AP Biology, AP Chemistry, Physics, Math up through precalculus, AP Spanish, SAT/ACT preparation, and MCAT preparation. Because I love teaching and helping students understand difficult concepts, I worked as a teacher's aid for a year in math and science classes at Claremont High School in Worcester, Massachusetts. I enjoy tutoring because it enables me to inspire others to realize the importance of learning. My teaching strategy is less lecture-based and instead encourages students to think critically and solve problems, not just passively listen to lessons. I know first-hand the impact that an excellent teacher can have on a student; I would not have made it to medical school if it had not been for the influence of a select few teachers I had in high school and college. I had the opportunity to learn many of the science concepts that I teach by working as a researcher at the National Institutes of Health and the FDA, where I studied HIV, West Nile Virus, and Hepatitis C Virus. I also did research as an undergraduate in the field of Type I Diabetes at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Just as past teachers have inspired me, I wish to similarly inspire my own students to realize all that they can accomplish. I love helping students succeed, and I am very dedicated to doing all that I can to make that happen." less...
