"Hi! I'm Dr Lauren Y. and I'm a trained developmental cognitive scientist (PhD from Teachers College, Columbia University) with 15+ years of experience with tutoring. Though I tutored prior to embarking on the road for my doctorate, the detailed knowledge I acquired, related to how people, specifically children, think and learn, allowed me to enhance my tutoring process by simultaneously focusing on broader aspects of cognition during the process of test prep or strengthening subject knowledge. I deal not only in math (through pre-calculus), and Reading, Writing, and Science topics (through college level, including AP), but also in the development of executive functioning and metacognitive skills. I've come to understand that strong tutoring focuses on both, but most tutors, and teachers for that matter, and not trained in how to integrate these topics into the educational process.
Thus, I have shifted to work with students (ages 4- college) in a more specialized capacity as an Educational Psychologist and am also an adjunct professor of human development in a graduate school which prepares future teachers and counselors for working in education. That provides something really essential to my work with private clients, which is a constant connection to research in the field of cognitive science (the science of thinking and learning), which I draw from as a part of my problem-solving process.
I am not the tutor that works on simple issues of low content knowledge - I can do that, but my work leans more towards dealing with pervasive issues involving the student's learning process and often the entirety of the child-family-school system. With students, I typically do 1-1.5 hour sessions, and once every couple of months, I schedule a "deep-dive" conversation with parents to discuss the student's cognition, progress and our goals. I provide a more all-encompassing and responsive experience which usually involves a combination of school work, special "Lauren work" or projects, and often test prep." less...
