"As an Educational Therapist certified by the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), I am committed to helping students succeed when their ability to achieve is challenged by learning difficulties and differences. While tutoring emphasizes individual subjects, educational therapists help identify overall learning barriers so that strategies can be developed to compensate and remediate these issues by drawing upon students’ considerable and distinctive strengths. My primary goal is to foster self-confident, independent learners who understand their learning profiles and can advocate for themselves.
My instruction areas are phonics, decoding and reading comprehension, writing as well as non-academic skills such as time management, study skills, planning and follow-through. Screening tools are used to uncover learning gaps in order to fill them. Every session is an opportunity for observation of progress which informs our continuing work together. My students have ranged from early elementary through high school. I also work on writing and executive function skills with college age students.
With a background as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, while I work academically, not clinically, I have deep empathy for my students’ struggles emotionally, understanding that a lack of academic success damages self-esteem and prevents experiencing a joy of learning. I place great emphasis on developing trusting and affirming relationships not only with my students and families, but also by building strong collaborative relationships with schools and allied professionals where we can work together to support students’ growth.
To offer some personal information, this summer I returned home to the east coast after years of living on the west coast. I have a daughter in college and live with my family, including our two furry companions, here in the New Haven area.
