"I began my career as a newspaper reporter in New York City and subsequently worked as a magazine editor, video producer and radio commentator. I continue to write for magazines on a freelance basis. As satisfying as that has been, I also began teaching at Old Dominion University 10 years ago because I wanted to share my passion for writing and literature. It has been a joy to do so. Teaching is not just a job to me. I firmly believe that it is my calling.

Over the years, in addition to teaching writing and literature, I have taught classes in American history. I am able to do so because my graduate degree is in American Studies--an interdisciplinary program that explores both history and culture with the objective of gaining a deeper understanding of our nation and shared values.

I have been successful as a teacher and private tutor for three reasons.

First, I am an award-winning writer myself, so I have a strong grasp of the English language.

Second, as an educator with 10 years of experience, I have developed highly effective techniques for helping students improve their writing and reading comprehension.

Finally, I love teaching and take pride in my interpersonal communication skills.

My passion for American history inspired me to earn my master's degree in American Studies from the City University of New York. I have written five books and hundreds of essays and articles on American history and culture. Additionally, I taught American history survey classes at Old Dominion University for several years. It is a joy to help students understand the events and forces that have shaped our nation.
