"I am a scientist in the medical device industry and a former Texas educator with current Texas certification in secondary science. I have two years' experience teaching high school students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Fundamental to my teaching philosophy is the belief that all students can learn and achieve their academic goals.
Because there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach, I learn my students needs and create lessons and study material that helps engage their unique learning style. In addition to making complex concepts approachable with vivid examples and metaphors, I regularly check for understanding by engaging students with questions at all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and engage their critical thinking skills
I taught secondary science including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. In addition to my professional teaching experience, I taught college-level biology labs and did molecular/synthetic biology research for eight years. My graduate studies and professional research experience have provided me with a strong background in college-level biological sciences with emphasis on biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and microbiology. I am experienced at reviewing primary literature, designing experiments, and scientific communication.
Some of my proudest moments on Wyzant have been helping learners discover the beauty in abstract scientific concepts and realize that they can engage with topics they previously found intimidating. As an educator, some of the best feelings are when a student says "Wow, that's so cool!" or tells me "That's easier than I thought." Additionally, I have helped multiple graduate students prepare for, and pass, their PhD qualifying exams by engaging in constructive challenges of their hypotheses, experimental design, and understanding of the story their data can tell.
